Why it stays with you

A museum built around the Matsukata Collection, but the building is as much of a draw as the paintings. The Main Building was designed by Le Corbusier and was inscribed on the World Heritage list in July 2016. Think of it as going to see the architecture as much as the art. The permanent collection is easy to drop into: ¥500 general, ¥250 for university students, and free for high school students and younger, for anyone under 18, and for those 65 and over. On Fridays and Saturdays it's open 9:30 to 20:00, so if you want to look around quietly in the evening, those are the two days to aim for. Closed Mondays. It's inside Ueno Park and follows on naturally from a walk there.
