Why it stays with you

The Toyo Bunko is a research institution for the history and culture of Asia, founded in 1924. Its holdings place it among the five largest Asian studies libraries in the world. The material gathered across more than ninety years sits half in the specialist library and half on public display in the museum.

Its most celebrated space is an entire wall of books — shelving that runs floor to ceiling, so that a person standing in the middle falls quiet without deciding to. That silence is not a designed effect. It comes from the density of the books themselves: this is material one institution bought one volume at a time over ninety years.

The combination of spaces is practical. The Orient Hall at 155 sqm (100 standing) is highly regarded; the exhibition area runs to 414 sqm; the lecture room is 82 sqm (40 seated, 80 standing); the inner court 150 sqm (150 standing); the cafe 145 sqm (40 seated, 70 standing). A lecture, an exhibition and a reception can be staged in sequence inside one building, with a garden in the middle to step out into.

Two kinds of occasion suit it. The first is an evening event for an academic society or a research-driven company — held inside an actual research institution, the credibility needs no explanation. The second is a brand event that needs an intellectual register. It stands in Honkomagome beside Rikugien, close enough to the center, and yet the air changes the moment you walk in.
