Why it stays with you

Miyagikyo makes both malt and grain whisky, the grain on a rare Coffey still. Japan is one of the world's five great whisky countries, and that combination inside a single distillery is unusual anywhere: the Coffey continuous still is an old method, now uncommon, and it keeps the sweetness and creamy roundness grain is capable of. The founder, Masataka Taketsuru, chose this land held between a gorge and clear water because it moved him, and built here.

For guests it is a walk that teaches them to read a glass at its source. The free guided tour passes the kiln tower where malt is dried, the still house and the red-brick warehouses, following malt as it becomes new spirit step by step, and ends in a tasting for up to about 30 guests in a room that smells of the work. Nikka has taken international honors at the World Whiskies Awards more than once, and is among the reasons Japanese whisky is taken seriously abroad. Gorge, brick, the heat of distillation and the amber in the glass make a layered piece of sensory work.

Culture, taste and brand travel together here. Guests watch a spirit being born in one of the world's great producing regions, then taste a decorated Japanese whisky between red-brick warehouses, and a group activity becomes a lesson at the source, with knowledge and standing behind it, and a light drink at the end. For incentive travel and business-events groups that care about judgment, an unbroken account from method to glass is what raises the quality of an itinerary most.
