Why it stays with you

Benesse House lets guests sleep inside the museum and walk its galleries after everyone has gone. Tadao Ando designed it in 1992, welding museum and hotel into one body. Nobody here visits an exhibition and then returns to a room: guests sleep among the art and wake in concrete and the light off the Seto Inland Sea.

The rarity is the hours after closing. Once the last visitor has left, overnight guests may walk back into the galleries, and rooms that were crowded by day hold nothing but their own footsteps. The works present themselves quite differently, in a way no museum ticket can buy. The buildings divide into Museum, Oval, Park and Beach, and the hilltop Oval, reached by a private monorail, is the most private and the most sought after. Ando's board-formed concrete, sea views framed like paintings, and contemporary art set through the buildings and across the grass make the stay itself part of the curation.

This is what raises Naoshima from an art pilgrimage to a way of living. Rooms are bookable, from about ¥40,000 a night depending on the building, and the property works as the residential core of a small incentive program, holding viewing, dining and rest under one roof. When guests have a museum to themselves at night, the sense of having been taken in by the art becomes the memory the whole trip anchors to.
