Why it stays with you

Nara is one of Japan's oldest capitals, and for a long time it had nowhere to stay that matched it. Guests who came seriously retreated to Osaka or Kyoto for the night, which reduced the old capital to a day trip. Shisui was built to end that, so that a guest can wake to a Nara morning among the World Heritage sites themselves.

It stands at the western edge of Nara Park, built around the former Nara Prefectural Governor's Residence of 1922, with Kengo Kuma joining tradition to the present across just 23 rooms. Nowhere else in Nara combines a reused historic building, Kuma's design and an onsen in every room. Kasuga Taisha, Kofukuji and Todaiji stand around it, so the first light on the World Heritage sites can be taken from the bath in a guest's own room. Suiyo, the main dining room, and Shoso, the sushi bar, carry the flavors of the region, and the SUI Spa is founded on East Asian medicine. Part of Marriott's Luxury Collection, it set the standard for luxury lodging in Nara from the day it opened.

This is what turns Nara from a supporting role in an itinerary into the lead. VIPs no longer borrow a bed in another city; they stay inside the context of the World Heritage. For guests who travel for architecture and want an onsen in the room within reach of the sites, a night in the old capital is itself the hospitality.
